Uma noveleta inofensiva, pouco mais do que um conto longo, que narra, através de saltos no tempo, a história de uma amizade de infância que acaba por transformar-se em amor. Os saltos levam-nos a 5 Natais, e a cinco raminhos de azevinho (Christamas bough será de azevinho?) sob os quais os beijos do título são trocados. Acompanhamos o crescimento das personagens... isto é, vamos vendo como vão crescendo, porque com saltos de vários anos, vamos tendo vislumbres quase fotográficos. Mesmo assim, a autora consegue criar alguma empatia - as personagens são-nos em geral simpáticas e queremos que sejam felizes.
Talvez pudesse ter sido uma bela história de época, se não fosse tão curta. A escrita é agradável, o enquandramento bem feito, as personagens prometem (bastante, até as secundárias), a história de amor podia ter sido giríssima, porque eles são amigos de infância... Assim, pareceu-me que os desenvolvimentos eram abruptos, queria saber mais sobre a vida daquela gente, sobretudo de Chad, o jovem, que parece ter atravessado maus momentos e ter tido grandes aventuras. A nossa visão é limitada, porém, aos curtos espaços de tempo que temos e à visão da personagem feminina, só sabemos o que ela sabe. As coisas tornam-se um pouco abruptas, sobretudo o fim, que é terrivelmente precipitado... O rapaz não aparecia há anos, de repente aparece, depois da morte do pai da protagonista, beija-a, volta no dia seguinte, e propõe casamento. E pronto. Finito. Até dei por mim a andar com as páginas do kindle para trás e para a frente (acaba nos 89%), para ter a certeza de que era mesmo o fim. Prometia cenas um pouco mais hot, mas nem chegam a aquecer...
Gostaria muito que a autora decidisse transformar isto numa história a sério... com um fim que desapontasse menos.

A harmless (very short) novel, little more than a long short story, telling the story of a childhood friendship which develops into love. Through large leaps in time, we are taken to five different Christmas and five Christmas boughs, under which the proferred kisses are exchanged. We follow the growth of the characters... I mean, we see how they grown they are in short snapshots several years apart. Still, we feel empathy towards the characters - they are nice and we want them to be happy.
It might have been a fine story, if it wasn't so short. The writing is pleasant, the time is well portrayed, the characters are promising (quite a lot, even the secondary ones) an the love story could have been really nice, because they are childhood friends... The way it's done, It seem to me that every development was quite abrupt, I wanted to find out more about the characters' lives, especially Chad, the young man, who seems to have been through some set backs and quite a few adventures, but our point of view is limited by the short little bitsof time we are given and the female character's view of events. We know only what she knows.
Things become a little rushed, particularly the end, which is terribly haste... The boy had been away for years, suddenly he shows up, after the death of the girl's father, he kisses her, comes back the next day and proposes t her. And that's that. Finito. I found myself pressind the next page / previous page button of my kindle (the book ends at 89%) to make sure it had really ended, It promised hot scenes, which never happened...
I sure wish the author would turn this into a real story... with a less disappointing ending.
